In a terminal, run the command below:

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

Fixes

1- You are most likely going to get the following error

The application ‘NetworkManager Applet’ (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked.

to fix it its simple, here is how i did it

I right clicked the wireless applet, went to ‘edit connections’, the wireless tab, and checked the “available to all users” for our wireless connection. Rebooted and it logged in and wireless was already connected. No password prompts.

2- Screenlet won’t stay on desktop when I minimize all windows

start gconf-editor and uncheck this value: /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/hide_skip_taskbar_windows

3- Compiz settings disappear
Reset them, or make a backup of your compiz settings folder. (NOT RECOMMENDED)

(06/22/2010) I have yet to find an app, or an efficient way to simply reset my desktop, leave the apps the way they are but just clean up all the configs and settings, and thus far this is the closest i get.

Always enjoyed using Picasa, but only problem was never able to upload facebook albums directly from Picasa, here is a little tutorial that helped me upload things directly to Facebook from Picasa.

Alright, preknowldge ~ = /home/yourusername/
Here is how to do it
Open a terminal and..

1-Install IE
we first install IE4Linux from their website.

wget http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
tar zxvf ies4linux-latest.tar.gz
cd ies4linux-*
./ies4linux

you get an error
run ./ies4linux again
you get another error
run ./ies4linux again

It should now say that you’ve installed IE4 and that it’s exacutable is in ~/bin/ie6
Notice that there is a new wine root installed in ~/.ies4linux/ie6
AHA

NOW download the WINDOWS VERSION OF PICASA!!! to your ~/.ies4linux/ie6/drive_c folder

as of now that is: http://dl.google.com/picasa/picasa35-setup.exe
google picasa to download the latest Picasa

Alright, now you have to start the setup within the ~/.ies4linux/ie6 root environment. How?

Open a terminal and copy and paste (shift+insert) the following command and edit so it fits your system

env WINEPREFIX=”/home/user/.ies4linux/ie6″ wine “C:\picasa35-setup.exe”

DONT FORGET TO CHANGE user to YOUR username

Now run through the setup then check

~/.ies4linux/ie6/drive_c/Program files/google/Picasa3/

is it there? good then you have done it right otherwise start over..

now go here

http://apps.facebook.com/picasauploa…?#installation

or use this link

http://webkinesis.com/fbpicasa/packa…acebook_v2.pbz

to download the facebook plugin download it to

~/.ies4linux/ie6/drive_c/Program Files/Google/Picasa3/buttons

clean up your mess that you extracted and downloaded before

rm -rf ies4linux*

Then start Picasa!!!

env WINEPREFIX=”/home/user/.ies4linux/ie6″ wine “C:\Program files\Google\Picasa3\Picasa3.exe”

DONT forget to change user to YOUR username

Now run Picasa you should see the facebook icon in picasa!!

Mark and upload your pictures..
Picasa will hang half the times but it will always upload your pictures to facebook!!

to close the hanged picasa use

pkill -9 wineserver

source: nidelius

Lucid and Maverick releases still did not solve issue, users are leaning to native apps, here’s a link that might help in deciding which photo manager to go for.

On Karmic Koala, I realized that whenever i play videos on youtube, or do any interactions that requires flash to be working, It takes several clicks, to like for example click on play for youtube, or takes several clicks to advance a song on youtube, or sometimes, it might not even work. After following this tutorial, It fixed my problems

WARNING: Close any opened window of the Firefox browser before you continue! Open this page in Opera, Epiphany or any other browser.

STEP 1 – Remove the 32-bit flash player

You must remove the existing installation of the 32-bit flash player before installing the 64-bit one. Go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager…

When Synaptic is ready, just type “nsplugin” (without quotes) in the search box. It will immediately find the package. Click on the green box in front of the “nspluginwrapper” package, and select the “Mark for Complete Removal” option…

You will also be notified about the removal of the “flashplugin-nonfree” package. Click on the “Mark” button…

Now, click on the “Apply” button; a confirmation window will appear, click “Apply,” and wait for the packages to be removed from your system. Close Synaptic when it finishes the removal of the 32-bit flash player packages.

STEP 2 – Install the 64-bit flash player
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplayer10.html [11/07/2009]
Extract the archive of the 64-bit flash player and you will end up with a “libflashplayer.so” file…

Now, open your Home folder, go to View -> Show Hidden Files to view the hidden files…

Enter the .mozilla folder and create a new directory called “plugins” (without quotes). Drag and drop the “libflashplayer.so” file from the desktop to the “plugins” folder…

STEP 3 – Verify the installation of the 64-bit flash player

You can safely open the Firefox web browser, and go to YouTube or any other website with flash content. Try to watch a movie. Eureka! It works!

When Lucid was released immediately, the instructions that i’m about to provide works, and still do (6/22/10) the only issue is that adobe discontinued 64 bit flash player for the moment, so we are not more getting updates.

Add the PPA via a terminal using

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sevenmachines/flash

Install

You may then proceed with installation by searching for or typing: -

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install flashplugin64-installer

Since Adobe discontinued their flash for 64 bit, there are several people that wrote scripts to attempt to update flash, and here is one of them that worked. Note both method do the same thing and install the same versions 10.0.45.2.

By default, the Flash player in the repositories is a 32-bit version of Flash. This version does not work properly on 64-bit installations of Ubuntu 10.04.
Someone made a bash script to automate the process of installing Flash Player 10 to Ubuntu. All you have to do is to type or copy-paste the following in the Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal):

wget http://conradmiguel.com/install-flash.sh
chmod +x install-flash.sh
./install-flash.sh

It will ask for your password. Just provide your password. Restart Firefox and enjoy your Flash Player 10!

Being a huge soccer fan, the only way i know for watching soccer games online is by using sopcast.

First install the software

Sopcast Internet TV

Sopcast is an interface to play live P2P video streams through the VLC media player. Install VLC first. This is a Chinese program and most content is hosted in China and may not be legal in your area. Please consult local regulations.

Download and install:

wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sp-auth_3.0.1_i386.deb
wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sopcast-player_0.3.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i sp-auth_3.0.1_i386.deb sopcast-player_0.3.0-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

For 64-bit systems, use:

wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sp-auth_3.0.1_amd64.deb
wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sopcast-player_0.3.0-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i sp-auth_3.0.1_amd64.deb sopcast-player_0.3.0-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Run:

Applications->Sound & Video->SopCast Player

2- set firefox to recognize the .sop protocol. This step is so that when you click on a link in ffox, you can get the application to open immediately. If you don’t use ffox, just right click on the sop link and copy it.

On Firefox address bar, enter: about:config
Right click, select new and string.
Set string name to: network.protocol-handler.app.sop
Set value to: /usr/bin/sopcast-player

3- The website for the Soccer games

goto http://www.myp2p.eu
click on live sports
then click on the soccer ball
click on the tv icon to the game of your choice
then a list will show up with different places where you can watch the game
click on the sop one, and the application should open
None Firefox users/who couldn’t get the protocol to work
(right click on the link copy it, got to the soap application
File>Open then paste the url)

*technique proposed in one of the comments. Note SopCast barely updates its PPA, so that technique is really not that different from the one at the beginning of the post

or you could install it using a PPA

Use the following command to add the sopcast player PPA

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jason-scheunemann/ppa

Update the source list using the following command

sudo apt-get update

First you need to install sp-auth .deb package so download from here

wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sp-auth_3.0.1_i386.deb
or
wget http://sopcast-player.googlecode.com/files/sp-auth_3.0.1_amd64.deb

Install .deb package

sudo dpkg -i sp-auth_3.0.1_i386.deb
or
sp-auth_3.0.1_amd64.deb

Install sopcast player using the following command

sudo apt-get install sopcast-player

or click on the following link to install

apt://sopcast-player

In Lucid, its the same instructions for the install, but to associate firefox with the SOP protocol, its a little different, follow these instructions instead.

To configure your Firefox to open “sop://” link automatically in Sopcast Player:

1. Type about:config in the address bar.

2. Click the button “I’ll be careful, I promise!”

3. Right click anywhere on the screen and select “New -> String”

4. Enter “network.protocol-handler.app.sop” (without the quote) in the preferences name

5. Enter “/usr/bin/sopcast-player” as the value.

6. If you are using Firefox 3.6 and above, you need to change the value of “network.protocol-handler.expose-all” to “false”

Now, when you click on the sop:// link, a window will open and prompt you for the applicationto open the link. Navigate to /usr/bin/sopcast-player. remember to check the box “remember my choice for sop link”.

Whenever you open a sopcast link, it will automatically open in sopcast player.

Oki this came to my attention, when I started following the crisis in Iran and was wondering how they did to bypass their government firewalls to keep the story alive in the states… This is also a quick tutorial on how to use Proxy.

1. Run the command: sudo apt-get install tor privoxy
2. Run the command: sudo gedit /etc/privoxy/config
3. Add the line (including the period at the end): forward-socks4a / localhost:9050 .
4. Comment out the line: logfile logfile (you know with the “#”)
5. Comment out the line: jarfile jarfile (you know with the “#”)
6. Restart the Privoxy service: sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy restart

How to set up Firefox to work with Tor:

1. Install the torbutton extension.
2. Restart Firefox
3. In the bottom right corner you’ll have a text blurb saying: Tor Disabled

run:

-sudo /etc/init.d/privoxy restart

-sudo /etc/init.d/tor restart

4. Enable Tor by clicking the blurb; it should say: Tor Enabled
5. Surf the web

To make sure it works try this https://check.torproject.org/

~Tor Official Website (includes repository for tor and privoxy)

~The full Wiki Page

GOOD LUCK!

You can also install an application called vidalia, its a TOR manager, that lets you turn the connections on and off, Its just basically a GUI version of the commands.

Once you start installing new GTK themes in Ubuntu, you will notice that applications that run as root, such as the Synaptic Package Manager, look unthemed and ugly. This is because although the root user is hidden in Ubuntu, it is still technically a separate user with separate appearance settings.

To fix this, run these three commands in a terminal. They will cause your own theme, font, and icon preferences to always be used by the root user.

sudo ln -s ~/.themes /root/.themes
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root/.icons
sudo ln -s ~/.fonts /root/.fonts

Leaving your root applications unthemed does an have one advantage, it reminds you when a running application has root privileges. Other than that I see no reason why this should not be the default for Ubuntu.

this tutorial targets only users with an HP DV6000, this is an exception, I will not make posts about specific hardwares.

tutorial from sananth in the Ubuntu Community

Steps:

1. Open a terminal and run:

which gcc

If the output is “/usr/bin/gcc” or something similar, you are set for the installation. If NOT, run the command:

sudo apt-get install gcc

and complete the installation of gcc.

2. Download the file called “AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.16.sh” (http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?s=07d5e55943b4d8c28165629b5f22294b&attachmentid=112291&d=1241376899), and put it in your home directory.

This is the shell script which is going to install ALSA 1.0.19 in debug mode to help us fix our mic settings. Credit for this installer goes to soundcheck and the other good folks at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6589810

3. Open up a terminal, type:

cd ~
chmod +x ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.16.sh
sudo ./AlsaUpgrade-1.0.x-rev-1.16.sh -di

Now comes the interesting part. This installation will take around 15 minutes, so please be patient. If you would like to follow the progress of the installation, look at the instructions the installation script shows, open up a new terminal, and type:

tail -f /var/log/AlsaUpgradeRev*.log

It is not mandatory to follow the installation. Once the installer is done, you will be able to see the prompt in the terminal to confirm it.

4. Then in a terminal run the following.

wget -O run.py http://www.alsa-project.org/hda-analyzer.py
sudo python run.py
